Presented by Appell Center for the Performing Arts at Appell Center for the Performing Arts

Jan 21, 2019

?It?s the freest album we?ve done, the most independent album we?ve done, and was the most fun we?ve ever had making a record,? says Oliver Wood. ?And most importantly, this is the most purely Wood Brothers? album we?ve ever made.? Indeed, The Wood Brothers? sixth outing, ?One Drop of Truth,? dives headfirst into a deep wellspring of sounds, styles and influences. Whereas their previous outings have often followed a conceptual and sonic through-line, here the long-standing trio featuring brothers Oliver and Chris Wood along with Jano Rix treat each song as if it were its own short film. The plaintive, country-folk of the album?s opening track ?River Takes The Town? gives way to the The Band-esque Americana soul of ?Happiness Jones.? The wistful ballad ?Strange As It Seems? floats on a cloud of stream of consciousness, standing in stark contrast to ?Sky High??a Saturday night barnburner built upon stinging slide…

Presented by Appell Center for the Performing Arts at Appell Center for the Performing Arts

Feb 01, 2019

The group sings from a traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya), which developed in the mines of South Africa. It was there that black workers were taken by rail to work far away from their homes and families. Poorly housed and paid worse, the mine workers would entertain themselves after a six-day week by singing songs into the wee hours on Sunday morning. When the miners returned to the homelands, this musical tradition returned with them. During the 1970’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo established themselves as the most successful singing group in South Africa. In the mid-1980s, American singer/songwriter Paul Simon visited South Africa and incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into the famous Graceland album (1986) – a landmark recording that was considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences. In addition to their work with Paul Simon, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded with Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Sarah McLachlan, Josh…

Feb 01 - Feb 08, 2019

Dorante is a charming young man newly arrived in the capital, and he has but a single flaw: He cannot tell the truth. In quick succession, he meets Cliton, a manservant who cannot tell a lie and falls in love with Clarice, a charming young woman whom he, unfortunately, mistakes for her friend Lucrece. What our hero regrettably does not know is that Clarice is secretly engaged to his best friend, Alcippe. Nor is he aware that his father is trying to get him married to Clarice, whom he thinks is Lucrece, who actually is in love with him. From all these misunderstandings and intricate lies springs a romantic rhyming tale brilliantly adapted for lovers of today. Recommended for ages 13 through adult.

Put a Lid on it: Canning in York County

Presented by York County History Center at York County Historical Society Museum

Feb 09, 2019

University of Maryland Professor Donald Linebaugh will highlight the economic impact of the industry on the growth and development of local communities. The canning industry, which dates back to the military campaigns of Napoleon, became an important part of the economy of Pennsylvania and Southeastern York County in the late 19th century. This presentation will examine the introduction and rise of the canning industry in southern York County, which is closely linked to the introduction of the Stewartstown and Maryland and Pennsylvania railroads and to the introduction of automated canning machinery, particularly the Sanitary Can machine. Canning houses provided opportunities for area farmers, allowing them to sell their entire crops under contract and opened employment opportunities to men and particularly women during the early 20th century. During the World Wars, canned goods from southeastern PA made their way around the world to feed U.S. troops; during WWII, German prisoners of…

Grand Saline, Texas, a town east of Dallas, has a history of racism, a history the community doesn?t talk about. This shroud of secrecy ended when Charles Moore, an elderly white preacher, self-immolated to protest the town?s racism in 2014, shining a spotlight on the town?s dark past. ?Man on Fire? untangles the pieces of this protest and questions the racism in Grand Saline today. Overall, ?Man on Fire? encapsulates the racial clima- te in Grand Saline and chronicles Moore?s life and death, presenting Grand Saline and Moore as two pil- lars of the lm?s narrative: one a disjointed man seeking truth and communal repentance and the other a com- munity whose present is inextricably tied to their past.

Mountain Man did not intend to disappear for the better part of a decade, or to take eight years to release its second album, Magic Ship. But for a trio of devoted friends for whom music has always seemed so effortless and graceful, that’s simply how life went. The wondrous Magic Ship—a magnetic fourteen-song reflection on the joys, follies, and oddities of existence—was well worth the wait. In 2009, when she was a student at a small liberal arts college in New England, Amelia Meath heard a gorgeous sound coming from the living room of her dormitory. She raced downstairs to find Molly Erin Sarlé singing “Dog Song,” a tender tune about lust, longing, and responsibility. Meath demanded that Sarlé, nearly a stranger, teach her the tune, which she, in turn, taught to a friend, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig. The next time the pair saw Sarlé, they sang “Dog Song” to, and then with, her.…

Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee JD Souther is "one of the most celebrated songwriters of his generation," writes Interview Magazine. "Raised on a steady diet of big band and jazz during his childhood, Souther has routinely returned to that music-as well as the genius songwriters of the early 20th century (Gershwin, Cole Porter)-for inspiration. On his latest studio album, Tenderness, Souther combines these musical threads, striking a perfect balance between understated jazz and the ineffable pop narratives that have been the backbone of much of his greatest work."

Classic Albums Live brings together some of the country's finest musicians to re-create live on stage the exact sounds of the greatest albums of the 60s and 70s. Musicians are chosen according to their sound and their fit into a particular niche, be it CCR, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, or Led Zeppelin. The album might require a sitar player, a children's choir, a string quartet or someone to ring the alarm clock. Whatever it takes, the musicians treat these revered albums like a score -the way a symphony orchestra treats Mozart. We’ve all read so much into the way The Beatles ended but this album is a testament to how giving and caring they were with each other. The four of them were deeply involved with each other’s songs. Abbey Road was released in October 1969. As a generation said goodbye to 10 years of heavy change, this album led us…
