JoAnne Bott Anderson

Visual Arts: Glasswork, Mixed Media, Painting

I ventured into the art world during my earlier careers in business and education. It started with glass and the creation of commissioned pieces and many gifts, and expanded into watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings as the years went on. But, it was with my venture into the world of bees that I truly found myself. Using their beeswax in the medium called Encaustic painting was mesmerizing. The lingering scent of honey as I touched the mixture with heat; the versatility as I blended, carved and collaged into it, captured me. I found I could begin a studio day with an idea and watch where it led me, either to an abstract or realistic endpoint, both showing my individual style. I’ve taught the medium at the York Town Craft Guild and in my studio called Art From the Beehive. Being part of the revitalization of this ancient art form as an artist and as an educator has made this third career the best!

I began painting in 2021 and have enjoyed learning about creating art through experimentation. My art is abstract, colorful, and intuitive. Each piece is an exploration of color, texture and process leading to uniquely different works. The works shown represent a body of work from my show called “Pieces: You’ve always had the power.” If you look carefully there is a puzzle piece hidden in each artwork. The pieces represent my love of puzzles that occupied my time during Covid shutdown. They also represent how we are all interconnected and that often you need to look below the surface to see what we all have in common.

Artist Statement I believe that we all experience the world in our own unique way. My paintings allow me to go on a journey and recapture experiences through different media. As I cross the bridge between thinking and feeling, I am able to enter a state of existence that revives the place, time, and all my five senses of that moment. I always go back to my reference pictures and sketches, but it is really what is in my heart that gets translated into each of my paintings. As an immigrant Latino woman whose experience has been about relocating from a small town to a big city and then to a smaller city, I find my themes reflect cultural diversity, movement and growth. I find nature grounds me and helps me move forward in my art. My desire is to connect on a human level with the community. I envision myself growing as a painter and inspiring others to be free and to celebrate their own creativity and identity. Rosa Luz Catterall

Christina Mattison Ebert

I am a visual artist specializing in illustration and multimedia work. I graduated from the School of Visual Arts in NYC (2017) with an MFA in Visual Narrative, and currently live and work in Red Lion. I received a Will Eisner Sequential Art Award from the SVA Student Alumni Association in 2017 for work on my MFA thesis project, a multimedia graphic novel called Landfall (www.landfall-story.com), and a Shirley Holden Helberg Award from American Pen Women in 2015 for my visual narrative work. My work generally falls into three categories—book/magazine illustration, multimedia and mixed media digital illustration. I have illustrated ten children’s books (my most recent book, “The Candyman Mystery,” was published by Kalaniot Books in 2022) and currently write and illustrate a monthly feature in Coast Monthly magazine on Texas Gulf Coast bird species. I also do illustration, interactive design and prototyping for stories intended for digital platforms such as the internet, e-books and mobile apps. Since attending SVA from 2015-2017, I have added short film and animation (usually in conjunction with my illustration work) to my list of interests. Spirituality has also entered my work, starting with my conversion to Judaism in 2011. Over the course of about 18 months, I created a weekly illustration with accompanying written description for each weekly Torah portion and Jewish holiday. I am a graduate from HACC’s photography program. Currently I work out of a homemade dark room for my cyanotypes and gum dichromates, but I also visit the HACC darkroom to develop and create prints from film. My work is experimental and abstract, and I love to combine mediums. Acid pop colors, abstract and surreal imagery are my absolute favorite.

As an artist, former art educator, and current instructor, I have seen firsthand the transformative power art evokes in people of all ages. Art connects us all. To me, art speaks a transcendental language that dissolves the barriers society has created for us. Art is a visual language which can be experienced and felt intimately, yet universally. My mission is to help others recognize their voice by coming into one’s own creativity, as well as being able to appreciate the artistic expression of others. We are creatively connected to ourselves, one another, and the world. As an artist, I make works to express the complex feelings that speak of my place in this world, relationships to others, and role as a human. I also feel a great responsibility to make art for others that can be cherished and enjoyed forever.

There is a box of 64 crayons in every one of my paintings. Those crayons are my first memory of making art, of going down the rabbit hole and giving life to my imagination. My favorite medium is colored pencils with collage coming in a close second. I am a mixed media artist in the truest sense. My painting style is a blend of realism and abstract, with an illustrative quality. Acrylic paint, colored pencils, and collage ephemera are my favorite materials. My art can be seen at Studio Gallery 234 in York, PA, and, Riverview Gallery in Havre de Grace MD. My paintings are conceptual, coming from the ideas living in my head transformed into art. Even though my paintings are planned and methodically created, it is still my imagination in the rabbit hole leading the way. My art is everything I wish I was in real life. I am the crayon box and my art is the magic that lives inside.

I make art about empathy. There is little difference between the miraculous structures of our lungs, lungs which move every few seconds to pull life-giving oxygen into our bodies, and the systems that keep a tiny beetle living and breathing. The beetle’s life is fragile, like our own. The joy it feels is real joy and the suffering it feels is real suffering. Hollie Johns

Hollie Johns has been a practicing artist for 22 years, professionally. Her art has always been strongly influenced by the natural world around her, but more recently she states ” I have felt an increasing need to draw attention and appreciation to this beautiful earth that so many of us take for granted. Hollie attended Maryland Institute College of Art where she gained a BFA in general fine arts, with a focus on photography and illustration. Although she now considers herself a painter, she had never painted, other than her foundation oil class in college, but she picked up a brush and some craft store acrylics, and has been painting ever since Following art school, her plans to be a children’s book illustrator shifted when she was offered an opportunity to take over an art gallery with over 100 artists from her high school art teacher. Since then she has worked for many local organizations teaching inner-city art classes and creating murals for Creative York(formerly YorkArts), The Salvation Army, The Lighthouse Children’s Home and several local urban gardens. She has helped start and run many art programs and yearly art festivals that still exist locally. Her love of helping other artists show and market their work took a new avenue this year when she opened Virtue Local Art Market in Hellam, PA with her husband and two friends. Together they are showing 45 local artists and crafters, working to start a Second Saturday Event in Hellam, Wrightsville and Columbia, and offering free space for artists, non-profits and children’s events to happen every Saturday from May-October.

Eleanor Justice

Eleanor Justice is a seasoned graphic designer with over two decades of corporate experience in Northern Virginia and Baltimore working with clients like Reebok, MasterCard, British Airways, American Airlines, T. Rowe Price, M&T Bank and Exxon. Her photography has been published twice in Maryland Life Magazine. Her mixed media assemblages explore pre-verbal concepts dealing with ancestors, the spirit world, the natural world, tension and harmony. More recently she has focused on volunteer work in York, PA, is the new Director of the York Time Bank, and is spearheading the creation of The Penn Street Art Bridge, a new public art space in York City.

B. Jean Klinedinst

Jean has done art and creative things all of her life. Since a small girl she has created head turning and award-winning pieces of art. She attended 3 years at York County Vocational-Technical School where she graduated. She then attended 3 years at Pennsylvania School of the Arts in Marietta, Pennsylvania, majoring in Commercial Art & Photography. She has worked as a freelance artist for most of her life as well as worked at various commercial graphics businesses in the York & Lancaster area before starting Jestek Custom Graphics with her husband Steve in 1997. While much of what is done at Jestek is commercial in nature, Jean over time has reached back to her freelance artist roots and is offering her unique and creative art skills for hire for commission art jobs. Jestek gives her the opportunity to blend commercial processes and her original art as well. She is also putting her art out to galleries in the area for display and available for purchase. Jean is also offering private art lessons or small group instructional gatherings. Get one on one attention in an art technique that interests you. Or just make time with your friends to do something relaxing and artistic. She really enjoys teaching techniques in drawing, acrylics, watercolor, garment painting/embellishing, mixed media, crafts, and more.

Jessica Lee

My work celebrates the artist’s hand in our sterile, flat screen-obsessed world. Jessica Lee is a graduate of York College of Pennsylvania where she received her BA in Fine Art with a minor in art history. She is a member of the King’s Courtyard Artist Collective and exhibits her work at their gallery at 124 East King Street, York. She has also been a featured artist at i-ronic, Small Star Art House, York Blue Moon, Gallery @227, and the York Art Association’s Sally Little Danyo Members’ Sales Gallery. Her abstract work has been exhibited at NASA Goddard in Greenbelt, MD, and at the Art Science Gallery in Austin, Texas. She has participated in group and juried exhibitions at the York Art Association, Creative York, The Maryland Federation of Art, and more. Lee focuses on textures, lines, shapes and what she refers to as “surface depth.” A sentiment that has held much personal meaning for her is in the Niche quote, “There are no beautiful surfaces without a great and terrible depth.” Using this as a metaphor for her own personal struggles and triumphs, Lee typically flattens the picture plane and creates instead a depth to her surfaces through translucent layers. “Living with a mental illness and raising a son on the autism spectrum, much of my more personal and serious work expresses these challenges and raw emotions. I work intuitively to create an abstract visual language rich with mark-making, symbolic use of color, and infusing the work with intention.”

Kayode Malomo

Kayode Malomo is a multimedia Artist based in York, Pennsylvania, USA. He is the Creative Director of Malomsyart Collection. Kayode’s work incorporates themes that oscillate around a game play of light and shadow, expressing strong versatility in acrylic, oil, airbrushing, collage, and mixed media. Bright colors painstakingly weave together in themes which depict happiness, hope, beauty, and the importance of education. He has also been featured in National and International dailies and was recognized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art during its “African Art, African Voices” Art exhibit in a feature film titled “In their own voices”, an interwoven portrait of four African artists in Pennsylvania. As a York resident, Malomo has exhibited at the Kerlin Gallery every year since 2018, the Prince George’s African American Museum of Art, MD, and the African American Museum of Art in Philadelphia. Malomo’s painting titled “Serenity” graced the cover of the 2017 January edition of the Journal of African Literature, a global professional society of diaspora scholars, teachers, artists, artistes, and creative writers from over 55 countries. A graduate of Temple University, Kayode currently serves as a Board Member of Creative York where he works inspire creativity particularly among youths and the community. One of Kayode’s favorite places to visit in York is the Rail Trail. His painting “Education is Key” which he donated is also on displayed at the Martin Library to inspire students

Missi McLaren Ritter

Missi McLaren Ritter is a York poet and painter. Her poetry collections include Chronicles of the Amazing Broken Girl (Sunbury Press, 2010), Bi-the-Way (MMR Books 2012) and Pocket-Seized Low Fat Love Poems (Poem Sugar Press, 2015). Her poems have also been featured in the first collection of Below the Belt (Poem Sugar Press 2012) authors and in Reclaiming Our Voices (Poem Sugar Press 2013). She is also a visual artist and a member of the King’s Courtyard Artists’ Collective at 124 E. King Street in downtown York, PA.

Amy Mummert

Amy Mummert resides in York, Pennsylvania. The daughter of an artist and a musician, she has been involved with the arts since childhood. After living in Philadelphia mealy 20 years, Amy left her position as an administrator at Community College of Philadelphia upon developing a disability, Myalgic Encephalomyalitis. She creates artwork to cope with past trauma and oversees two art movements to promote accessibility to visual arts. Amy is the founder of York Artbook Collective (launched in January 2021). Inspired by the Brooklyn Sketchbook Project, her goal was to showcase local artists’ works a well as to make them art accessible to those who might not otherwise see such a diversity of artwork. The YAC library travels to various county events including York Pride, and it is otherwise housed at HIVE artspace. Amy is also the founder of World Art Drop: York (est. 2017), a movement to share art as random acts of kindness. Since 2017, she has been facilitating monthly community paint nights in the WeCo District of York City.

Timothy Myers

I am a figurative Fine Artist and Illustrator from Hanover, PA. My work explores the commonality of struggle and trauma inherited within the human condition. The problems we all face, as well as the shared desire and fortitude to overcome them. I often utilize contrasting soft realism against aggressive abstraction. I sometimes smear, splatter, tear and even burn my work. I bring the piece itself close to destruction while creating it. As in life, chance plays a major part in my creative process. I aim to create visually arresting images that are thought provoking with relatable thematic elements.

Carol Oldenburg

Carol Oldenburg is a mid-career artist living and working in York, PA. Having made up her mind in first grade to become an artist, Carol went on to doggedly pursue a career as a portrait artist and later as landscape painter. No matter the subject she finds the challenge of depicting it in a way that will intrigue the viewer a worthy passion. Carol received her BFA from Kutztown University in an age when conceptualism was touted and drawing the figure was the exception. Never one to run with the crowd, she embraced figure drawing and drawing in general as an avenue of learning. It wasn’t until her 40’s that painting moved to the forefront of her art expression. There is a great variety in subject matter in Carol’s paintings and yet they are all distinctly recognized as hers. “A face, a landscape, a garden or a flower; it is all about light, shape and color. Beauty can be seen and depicted in a painting of anything.” Carol has exhibited her paintings widely throughout the United States and has won numerous awards for both drawing and painting. Her work as been displayed in Togo, Africa as part of the Art in the Embassies Program. Being part of the program led to both a White House and State Department invitation to celebrate the 40th Anniversary. She works out of OMG STUDIOS in downtown York. Being downtown has allowed Carol and the OMG artists to engage the community through studio tours and classes held at the studio and in collaboration with local businesses.

Judy Orcutt

I always loved the printed word and loved to draw. I had taken calligraphy classes locally and it was joyous to me; so I started to develop a line of calligraphy note cards. But they needed something in order to have some pizzazz. I saw a design that had a pressed flower and oh yay, I thought; I can do so much with that. Having studied botany in pharmacy school, an interest in plants and flowers was present; so it was a natural to identify and work with these wonderful flowers that I had pressed. My business, QuilliGraphy was started in 1997 and I had developed over 100 designs which I wholesaled and sold on line on my website. Presently I have 160+ designs. QuilliGraphy's mission is to use natural materials to create art that stimulates the mind, validates the spirit, and celebrates the universe. It celebrates life and beauty. QuilliGraphy is a socially conscious business, contributing to local art, local events, libraries and breast cancer research and greyhound rescue and the American Association of University Women.

Fiel Patricio

Fiel Patricio is an artist based in York, Pennsylvania who exhibits locally, nationally and internationally. She creates abstract and experimental mixed media works using water-based mediums and integrating collage, linocuts, woodcuts and printmaking into her art. She is a signature member of Philadelphia Water Color Society and Baltimore Watercolor Society. Her work was not only shown in Pennsylvania (York, Philadelphia, Lancaster, Harrisburg, etc.) but also in New York, Maryland, Florida and Paris. She is also a published photographer. In 2019, she was honored as the York FineArts Festival (YorkFest) Featured Artist. Her work was also accepted at the Lancaster Museum of Art as part of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society’s (PWS) 40th International Juried Exhibition, the York Art Association’s 49th Annual Open Juried Exhibition and the Maryland Federation of Art’s 17th Annual “Small Wonders” Show, juried by Corcoran Gallery of Art Curator Emerita Linda Crocker Simmons. Troy Patterson

Troy Patterson is a graphic designer, design educator, and a letterpress practitioner and collector of things. He received a BFA in Communication Design from Kutztown University and an MFA in Graphic Design from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Patterson is an assistant professor of graphic design at York College of Pennsylvania. While working with young designers is his main focus these days, he continues to be deeply involved in his own personal practice at Catch and Release Press. At C&RP he works on a range of projects, both commercial and personal where he makes 21st century digitally based graphic design and experiments in letterpress processes. He lives and practices in York, PA.

Debi Peters

Perfection. Is there such a thing? So why are we always trying so hard to find it in all we do? I see no reason to paint perfection. In fact, I adore imperfection. Beauty in the imperfect. No one item is the same, everything and everyone different, not perfect but indeed beautiful! I love to paint a perfectly fine piece then push my paintbrush through it to deconstruct the subject. I rely heavily on color, value and mark making. I rarely blend and mix on the palette, I prefer to allow the colors to commingle and remain bright on the board or canvas. I constantly push the boundaries of color theory. Although I do use local color in my work, I try to punctuate it with imaginative, unexpected color choices. Tons of light and darks. I love to accentuate the shadows and the light. It creates such drama, much like the chiaroscuro used by the old masters. My favorite way to do this is with the alla prima painting method, using common big-box store, household interior paint along with thinned artist acrylic paint. It pushes around the canvas beautifully. Using this wet paint on wet paint, quick painting method is so gratifying, the paint slides and puckers, bumps and bubbles, leaving chunky, sumptuous brush marks. It also forces me to work fast before the paint dries, which allows me to keep from trying to create a “perfect” piece.

Creative, self motivated, design-oriented, Fun Loving, and passionate for all things art! A Lithuanian Born Artist residing currently in York Pennsylvania. I moved to America in 1991 and ended up in York studying design, layout, motion graphics and video at Bradley Academy for Visual Arts graduating in 2005. From there my time has been spent working and creating art in or around the York area you may have seen some around at galleries such as Hive Art Space, The Parliament, Studio 117, CoWork 155, Ironic, Marketview Arts, and others. My art also may have caught your eye around the city, since I do large scale window and wall murals (trust me if you seen one you know my work) 😉
