Justin Ruby’s LAST York art exhibit’s closing reception
“Are We There Yet?” is a question we’ve all asked at some point in our lives, probably as children on a long car ride. We all have a destination in mind, it’s the driving force of our day to day existence, and what we choose to focus and spend our time on. In this case, Justin Ruby asks us in relation to the decadence of American culture. He uses deconstructed sneakers and repurposed fabrics from discarded vehicles to communicate the idea of mobility. Ruby takes a look at our societal tendencies and indulgences that we often take part in unconsciously. He addresses ideas of toxic masculinity, materialism, and instant gratification as contributing factors to our cultural decline. It seems as though we wish for a better life with greater values and purpose, but continue to try and keep up with trends and mindlessly take part in lifestyles that make happiness seem unattainable. What is the destination we wish for and where are we actually heading? Are We There Yet?
