Celebrate July 4th at the Ma & Pa Railroad

Celebrate America’s 245th birthday with an old-fashioned family picnic at the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village on July 4th.

What better way to celebrate America’s 245th birthday than with an old-fashioned family picnic at the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village on Sunday, July 4. Food will be available for sale between noon and 5 pm that day, or you are welcome to bring your own picnic food. The menu includes sloppy joes, barbequed pulled pork sandwiches, sides, chips, cookies, and beverages for purchase. The Heritage Village will also have vintage slushies – the perfect treat for a hot summer day.

Motorcar train rides will be operating hourly through the Muddy Creek Valley at 1:15, 2:15, 3:15 and 4:15 pm. The train fare is $10 for adults, $7 for children 3-12 and age 2 and under free. It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance through the Ma & Pa Railroad Preservation Society website at www.MaAndPaRailroad.com

In addition, there will be old fashioned crafts and games throughout the afternoon during this first- time event. The 1915-era A. M. Grove general store, mill and grain elevator will be open with costumed docents. Guided tours of the village of Muddy Creek Forks are available for visitors who buy train tickets.

Other events later this summer – all designed to inform and entertain people of all ages include a Civil War Encampment – July 18; Early American Autos – August 15 and a World War II Encampment – August 28 and 29.

Special events this fall include a murder mystery dinner with moonlight train ride and the annual Railroad Heritage Day in September; Pumpkin Patch excursions, World War I encampment, and fall foliage excursions in October; and Christmas City Express programs in December.

The guided village tours that were the main feature of the visitor experience in 2020 continue this season. Visitors who purchase train tickets can register for one of the three guided tours that will be offered on most open days. Visitors are asked to request a tour reservation when they pick up their train tickets, as the number of people who can be accommodated on the tours is limited.
