Melanie M. Rodgers: Typographic Paintings!

The Pennsylvania Arts Experience shines the spotlight on Melanie M. Rodgers in March with a solo exhibition in our gallery, located inside Marketview Arts (37 West Philadelphia St, York). Rodgers’ main area of interest is how graphic design form can be used to convey the personal narrative, and how this content is interpreted by the viewer. Her works, which include paintings, publications and objects, is also an investigation into the mechanics and aesthetics of the handlettered form. With bits of influence from 20th century sign painting, Victorian wood type, graffiti and underground comics, Rodgers examines word-based storytelling in a variety of formats and media, some one-of-a kind and some as multiples. With a foot in both the applied and fine art worlds, Rodgers’ works are evidence of her deep, ingrained involvement with words and the letters that make them. Rodgers holds an M.F.A. in Studio Art from Maryland Institute College of Art and is an Associate Professor of Art at York College of PA.
