Perspectives on York, 1969 – 2019

Last year, the York Daily Record held an event at Martin Library focused on the causes of York’s racial uprisings in 1968 and 1969, focusing particularly on problems with housing, health care, transportation and jobs in the minority community – then and now.

It was a great discussion, but because of time constraints, we couldn’t delve too deeply into any one topic.

Now, on the 50th anniversary of the unrest, the YDR and the York County History Center are sponsoring three forums to more thoroughly explore several of those issues – assessing how far our community has come since then and what work remains to create a more diverse and equitable community. The forums are titled, “Perspectives on York, 1969-2019: What led to York’s revolts – and what remains to be done?”

The sessions are set for 7 p.m. at Logos Academy, 250 West King St., York, on the following dates:

Sept. 19: Housing
We’ll explore the conditions of housing in York’s minority communities – then and now. Panelists for the session are York College Professor Peter Levy, York City Historian Jeffrey Kirkland, Sal Galdamez, York XL, and York Area Housing Group Director Joyce Santiago.

Oct. 17: Medical Care
We’ll explore access to medical care in the city and beyond – then and now. Panelists for the session are Dr. Deborah McMillan, Family First Health President and CEO Jenny Englerth and Delma Rivera, whose father, Dr. Edwin Rivera, was a pioneering medical care provider for York’s Latino community.

Nov. 21: Jobs and the Economy
How equitable was access to economic prosperity in 1969 – and how much has that changed over the last 50 years? Panelists to be determined.

The events are free and open to the public.

There is plenty of parking in the Logos lot and nearby.
