A restored “Huey” helicopter, that flew during the war in Vietnam, is landing at Newberry Commons Shopping Center in Etters at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 11. The flight was originally planned for May 14. According to an email from Robert Schulze, with the Liberty War Bird Association, the “UH-1 ground maintenance and flight checks were rained out today forcing us to move that work to May 14, 2022.” The helicopter is now rescheduled to be on site from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 11 as part of Red Land Community Library’s programs and display about the Vietnam War. The Civil Air Patrol Squadron 302 will assist with logistics for the day. Related activities will begin at 1:00 p.m.

According to Red Land Community Library Manager Karen Hostetter, every war has a defining image that defines that conflict. In Vietnam, from 1968-1970, it was the “Huey” – Bell UH1 Iroquois. The “Huey” was restored by the Liberty War Bird Association in Lancaster, whose mission is to educate, honor, and restore. “Having the ‘Huey’ land in Newberry Commons will be the perfect fit for our program on the topic and month-long display on the Vietnam War,” says Hostetter. “It will be an amazing opportunity for visitors to learn about the work that the helicopter did during that conflict.”

Richard “Buck” Buchanan, a Huey helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, will present a program on the essential roles of the Huey helicopter in Vietnam throughout 1968-1970. The event will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 23 at the library. Interested individuals should register at yorklibraries.org/events.

“We value and honor the service of our military,” says Robert F. Lambert, York County Libraries President, and United States Marine Corps Veteran. “Red Land’s upcoming programs offer a unique opportunity for community members to see the iconic ‘Huey’ and listen to a pilot’s firsthand account of the experience and sacrifices of our veterans during the Vietnam War.”

The library welcomes support from veteran and community organizations to help with the funds needed to present the Huey program. For more information, please contact the library.
