Seminar Topics:

“The Importance of Trees and Shrubs” presented by Wendy Brister.  Wendy is a garden designer/consultant and lecturer in the Mid-Atlantic Area.  She is an Adjunct Instructor of horticulture at Community College of Baltimore County and Conference Coordinator of the Native Plants in the Landscape Conference held yearly at Millersville College.

“Invasives” presented by Connie Schmotzer.  Connie works as Consumer Horticulture Education for Penn State Extension in York County, PA, where she coordinates the Master Gardener Program and the Mid-Atlantic Ecological Landscaping partnership (MAEscapes).  Since 2011, she has taken leadership of the statewide Master Gardener Pollinator Monitoring Program and the Penn State Pollinator Friendly Garden Certification program.  She also spearheaded a large pollinator trial at Penn State’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center, trialing 84 varieties of native plants.  Connie has a B.A. from Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA and did graduate work at Montana State University.

“Planting for Success” presented by Dean Emig.  Dean grew up in southern York County and is a lifelong county resident.  His family lived on 2 acres of land where they grew corn, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, raspberries and other vegetables.  He also helped to pick cherries from 2 cherry trees on the property and all of these crops were sold at a roadside stand and also in a market house in York city.  He was surrounded by woods and spent a lot of time hunting and walking through those woods.  After graduating from college, he spent many years in several manufacturing supervisory positions throughout central Pennsylvania.  He also operated 2 businesses.  He became a Master Gardener in 2010 and took over the chairmanship of the Historic Trees Arboretum at Pleasant Acres.  He continues to chair that position and is planning for the move of the arboretum to John Rudy Co. Park.
