While the Wicked Witch of the West became a staple of Broadway thanks to a different production, the character’s roots are firmly planted in The Wizard of Oz. Legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Time Rice took their version of the original to the stage in 2011. Their tale tells the same basic tale familiar to readers of the original book and popular 1939 film. Dorothy finds herself swept up in a passing tornado and finds herself in the wondrous land of Oz. With the help of a local wizard and some friends she meets along the way, she defeats the wicked witch and learns she was closer to making it home than she ever knew all along.
