Through Our Lens: I Can't Breathe

Washington Winnona Images was founded on the legacy of Winonna F. Smith, born on a farm during the Great Depression in Washington, Pennsylvania. A coal miner’s daughter who could vividly recall eating dandelions for dinner, Winnona would go on to be an entrepreneur, acclaimed massage therapist, model for Essence Magazine, mother-grandmother-great grandmother, and community activist. Washington Winnona Images seeks to follow in the legacy and vision for a safer and better world that Ms. Smith herself strove to achieve, having lost her only son to gun violence in Atlanta, Georgia in 1986.
Cisco Soto and Miles Murdaugh will explore the mission of Washington Winnona Images and their current exhibition at Marketview Arts, “Through Our Lens: I Can’t Breathe.” Some of the photographs on display are from the powerful Black Lives Matter events held in downtown York this summer with additional photos from the Called to Action events formed in the wake of the BLM events. The exhibition will also include books, poetry, props, and a playlist associated with the images in the exhibition. Cisco and Miles listened to music while photographing the events and the lyrics from the tracks on this playlist describe the images, how they were captured, and the conversation the artists seek to have with viewers through the images. This exhibition represents voices of people often unheard or misunderstood (children, the under-educated, non-political establishment authority figures, etc) while demonstrating the solidarity amongst activists of all ages, media, leaders, and police who attended the BLM events.
Ultimately, the artists view themselves as historians whose photos speak to both the present and future generations for years to come.
