About the exhibit:
Troy Patterson is a graphic designer, design educator, and a letterpress practitioner and collector of things. Like many designers, Patterson is a collector. He collects research, concepts, images, texts, and other information that he uses to transpose on his design. But he also collects serpentine belts, beer bottles, and old car manuals, among other junk, all of which are intricately linked to the things he makes. The work in the Out of Chaos exhibition is the combination of two parts. One is the reduction of collections and the other is the exploration of letterpress printing, pushing beyond the boundaries of traditional printing methods to construct unexpected results. It is an investigation of his collection of old magazines, books, discarded ephemera, a stockpile of cast-off prints from his letterpress studio and the incorporation of monotype letterpress printing using discarded machine parts with a homemade printing press. Using this vast collection, he is cutting and pasting a distinctive and contemporary style of collage and mixed media art as a way to release objects, ideas, and design back into the world. The intent is to bring back collective memories of nostalgic days gone by. His collections have been a self-imposed burden, twirling around in his head for years. The choice to dissolve his collections was a very difficult one. However, while he is allowing the collections to go away, he has achieved a new way to honor these collections. Considering the idea of thoughtfully and mindfully reducing his collections by releasing them in to a new form and not just trashing them, gives him a powerful sense of relief and release. When combined with a unique process of letterpress printing the collaged compositions are noisy and naturally distressed, consisting of irregularities and disruptions. Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in the art making process as a community contributor.

Also opening the same night is the YorkFest Adult Juried Exhibit in the Kerlin Gallery at Creative York, with an artist award ceremony at 6:30pm, followed by the winners of the YorkFest Adult Literary Competition at 7pm.

Both exhibits will be on display from August 25 – September 16, 2017.
