The Codorus Valley, an overview of its History by Tom Yingling
The Codorus Valley Area Historical Society covers the region between the three main branches of the Codorus Creek in southwestern and southcentral York County. It’s an region that has become a hub for development, while simultaneously an area tethered to the past. The Codorus Valley was first settled by Germans from the Palatinate and Switzerland, as west of the Susquehanna opened to European settlement in the 1730s. It retains those roots to this day. The Codorus Valley contained some of the earliest roads, the first railroads, and some of York County’s earliest churches. Natural resources and manufacturing skills contributed to the Revolutionary War and was impacted by the encroachment of the Civil War into Pennsylvania.
Join us for a small peek at our Codorus Valley past with Tom Yingling, president of the Codorus Valley Area Historical Society located in Jefferson, York County, as well as the editor for the society’s bimonthly newsletter.  He is a lifelong resident of York County, living in both the city of York and Jefferson, with many of his family lines reaching back to the original settlements.
The York County Writers’ Roundtable networks writers and researchers of York County and regional history. The group meets on the first Thursday of every quarter at 7:00 p.m. at the Historical Society Museum, Library & Archives at 250 E. Market St.  This event is free and open to the public.
