The Battle of Hanover in south-central Pennsylvania is often referred to as the Civil War’s “first battle on free soil”. Previous large-scale fighting had taken place in slave-holding states, whether in the Confederacy or as border states. Hanover, one of the largest battles of the Gettysburg Campaign, was the first fight as a newly promoted general for George Armstrong Custer. Confederate Major General J.E.B. Stuart withdrew after several hours of fighting and continued his quest to locate the Army of Northern Virginia, leaving the battlefield in Union hands.
In this talk, multiple award-winning author Scott L. Mingus, Sr., looks not only at the Battle of Hanover but also at the town’s place in the entire Civil War, year by year. Profusely illustrated with photographs from the Hanover Area Historical Society, Library of Congress, and private collections, this is the first detailed look at Hanover’s people, places, churches, farmers, industry, and daily activities. From wartime fire protection to the price of house insurance to the rising inflation on food and household staples, Mingus provides a sweeping overview of what life was like in a typical border town in south-central Pennsylvania during the war.
