I teach the craft of community storytelling through video and still photographs.
My experience as a visual storyteller goes back to 1969 when I began my photojournalism career.
Since 2000 I have been creating video stories for The York Dispatch where I was the assistant managing editor for visuals.
While at the Dispatch my personal mission was to teach young upcoming journalists my craft.
Recently retired from the newspaper I want to continue teaching the art of visual storytelling.
During my career as a photojournalist and editor, I joined the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) where I began coaching upcoming photographers.
Each year at the NPPA’s Northern Short Course, a four-day workshop, I critiqued portfolios for the students, most of who were in or recently graduated from college.
Beginning with my work at the Bristol, CT., Press in the early 1990’s I developed a photography internship to help a young photojournalist start their career in journalism.
Over the past years, I have worked with after school programs, teaching both video and still photographs, at York City School’s after-school programs (through Martin Library), the Salem Square Library, and Conewago Valley Intermediate School (21st Century Cohort 8 program).
Video stories can help empower young people to use their creativity and digital skills to help change their communities.
