My name is Jakyra Simpson, aka Ky the Chemist, a Master Chemist, native of York City, and local artist. During my graduate school experience, I trailblazed and created my own research project, “Using hip-hop and sneaker culture to teach chemistry to the public,” I discovered the disparities in Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEAM) education, specifically chemistry within underrepresented, marginalized, and underserved communities and its application to everyday life. This inspired me to design STEAM sneaker art workshops that center on hands-on activities and cultural themes to engage and inspire students to pursue STEAM sciences and expose them to the possibility of interdisciplinary science.

As a chemist, science communicator, and educator who is passionate about inspiring young
people to pursue careers in STEAM. My goals are to encourage students to pursue academic studies in the STEAM field and explore the realm of interdisciplinary sciences incorporating their passions, interests, and culture into their work. My journey and experiences have shaped me as a scientist and communicator, allowing me to showcase my journey and show students that regardless of their adversities, they can truly accomplish anything they put their minds to.
