Harry Potter-Inspired Paper Cutting: Scherenschnitte Family Workshop

Discover a traditional Pennsylvania German art with a Harry Potter spin.

Scherenschnitte, which means “scissor-cutting” in German, is a traditional folk art of the Pennsylvania Germans. In this workshop, families will learn about scherenschnitte and receive instruction in the techniques of paper cutting to create a Harry-Potter inspired design. Caregivers can work with a child to complete a single project, or they can register both themselves and their child as participants, and both can complete their own project.

**Paper cutting uses craft knives and scissors, so this activity is recommended for children 9 years of age or older. An adult must be present and assist child, as needed.

Instructor: Joli Miller (chapter juried by York Town Craft Guild) was first exposed to scherenschnitting at a Girl Scouting craft event. She entered a picture in the Adams County, South Mountain Fair and won Best of Show. She finds potential designs all around her: a pattern on the floor, a mural on the wall, a tree with no leaves, shadows, silhouettes, stained glass windows and the list goes on.
