History of Costume in Pennsylvania: 1600-1900

The History Center’s September Second Saturday Program will feature Albright College professor Dr. Damayanthie Eluwawalage

Dr. Eluwawalage will examine the clothing practices and choices in Pennsylvania from 1600-1900. Eluwawalage will explore how internal and external influences impacted Pennsylvanians’ way of dressing, effected their societal and cultural attitudes, and social demeanor. The program will showcase how clothing was used as a symbolic indicator of status and how it influenced the class distinction in early Pennsylvanian society.

Damayanthie Eluwawalage, Ph.D., MPHA, is a researcher, author, historian, private pilot, and designer from Reading, PA. Dr. Eluwawalage earned her interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Design and History from Edith Cowan University in Australia, and a B.A. in Design from the Curtin University of Technology in Australia.
