Kirsten Leenaars: (Re)Housing the American Dream
September 6 – October 12, 2018 (Opens at 5:00 PM on 9/6)
York College Galleries, Wolf Hall
(Re)Housing the American Dream is an ongoing community-based performative documentary project that explores the role of film as political action. Now in its third iteration under the direction of Kirsten Leenaars (Dutch, b. 1976), the project combines elements of Leenaars’ hybrid social, performance, and video practice to create a forum for a group of refugee and American born children to engage critically with complex social and civic issues. This exhibition will feature all three main video works that were produced by Kirsten and her young collaborators from 2015-2018 and include additional related works from the project.
The exhibition will officially open at 5:00PM on Thursday, September 6. The artist will speak about the project and answer questions in the gallery (not in DeMeester as had been advertised) at 5:30PM. Leenaars will return in October for a formal slide lecture about the exhibition in DeMeester Recital Hall.
