Annual Docent Day at Ma & Pa Railroad

Annual Docent Day at Ma & Pa Railroad

Presented by Ma & Pa Railroad Preservation Society at Ma & Pa Railroad Village

Even with the severe storm damage to the tracks of the Ma & Pa Railroad last fall, the 1915-era village and train will soon open for the season. Now more than ever, volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities. Training for docents (historically trained volunteers) takes place Saturday, May 4, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the General Store at Muddy Creek Forks, 1258 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Airville, Pa. 17301.

Train operators, store clerks, millers, station agents and other period-specific positions are among the volunteer opportunities. New volunteers are always welcome to participate and become a part of the museum that is open regularly from early June through mid-December.

The annual train operator session, also held that day, is open to anyone age 18 years and older. It provides refresher training for current operators and an introduction to the rules and practical training required for new operators to be certified.

Volunteer day is also a good time to explore behind the scenes opportunities including track work, right-of-way maintenance, mechanical work, carpentry, welding, painting, masonry, and lawn and garden care. All kinds of interests and skill are needed.
