Lessons from a Maestra: Leadership, Innovation and Risk-taking

Presented by York College of PA at York College of PA

Marin Alsop, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s conductor and music director, will present York College’s 2019 Chloé Eichelberger ’54 Business Education Lecture at 7:15 p.m., Sept. 24, in the Waldner Performing Arts Center. The talk, “Lessons from a Maestra: Leadership, Innovation and Risk-taking,” is open to the public free of charge and will be followed at 8:30 p.m. by an opportunity to meet Alsop and purchase signed CDs.

Alsop also made history as the music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO), the first woman to head a major American orchestra. She has spent a lifetime dedicated to music. The first woman to conduct the “Last Night of the Proms” in its more than 100-year history, she was also the first conductor to be named a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow.

In Baltimore, Alsop has been credited with reinvigorating the BSO and leading a major community outreach effort that has generated tremendous excitement. In 2008, along with the BSO, she unveiled ORCHkids, an education initiative that provides music education, instruments, and mentorship to more than 1,000 kids in Baltimore. For adults, Alsop conducts the BSO Academy, a summer fantasy camp for adults, and the biannual “Rusty Musicians” event, which gives amateur players the opportunity to play music with the BSO.
