Reliving & reviving the sounds & sights of York’s heyday during World War II with 6 swing bands, dancers, and many exhibits Downtown.
It\’s Swing Time again in York, Pennsylvania, and we\’re bringing it back with style: York\’s historic Valencia Ballroom now reopened under new management. One of just a half dozen grand ballrooms from the big band era, the Valencia looks marvelous. Everything is restored to its original art deco grandeur. With its fully spring loaded, 4000 square foot dance floor, the ballroom has been called the best dance venue east of the Mississippi River. Big band era history fills every corner of this magnificent building, which also holds the distinction of being the first major ballroom to be air conditioned.
The Valencia has played host to a huge list of musical talent, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Kay Kyser, Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown, Buddy Rich and a young Frank Sinatra. On Saturday, April 22, 2017, we are bringing back the fun and excitement of the big band years to the Valencia once again. This will be an ALL DAY EVENT, featuring SIX BIG BANDS, with the music kicking off at 9:30 AM, and rolling on until midnight. There will be swing dance demonstrations and workshops throughout the day, featuring York\’s Victrola Dance Studio, and more. Regional bands include – Reisterstown Jazz Ensemble Inc., M&J Big Band, Gettysburg Big Band, Glass City Swing Band, the Powerhouse Big Band – who will join the Unforgettable Big Band to keep the joint jumping all day long, as each band will be presenting two swinging hours of great music.
