* The life of William C. Goodridge is one of the greatest all-American stories rarely told. Goodridge rose from the institution of slavery and spent most of his youth as an indentured servant. He earned his freedom at 16 and went on to become one of York, Pennsylvania’s most prominent businessmen in the years prior to the Civil War wielding superb skills as an entrepreneur. He rose from a barbershop owner to real estate speculator and perhaps most importantly proprietor of the Reliance Line, rail cars transporting products from the South and West to Philadelphia. He risked his place as one of York’s most respected and visible business leaders, using his own personal home as a station on the Underground Railroad and his railcars as conduits to freedom. Help us preserve, honor and hallow the memory of so many who risked their lives in pursuit of freedom by interpreting your vision of Freedom Seekers.
