TEEN TOWN HALL - Part of the Story 2017

Presented by York County Libraries at Martin Library

Part of the Story 2017

Saturday, November 11, 10 AM

Martin Library, Quiet Reading Room

Your father beats you. Do you stay at home, or run away?

You meet someone who offers you drugs to numb the pain.  Do you accept, or refuse?

In the book, Smack, by Melvin Burgess, Tar is faced with these choices.  What would you do?

Teens at participating libraries and schools across York County have been considering this and other questions as they have been reading Smack, the 2017 pick for the teen program series Part of the Story. The theme this year is opioid addiction, a growing crisis that is affecting communities all across the United States.

Over the course of five weeks, teens have read and talked about the book, Smack, met the author, Melvin Burgess, and interacted with local community members who have experienced, in some way, the effects of addiction. As a result, teens have been empowered to respond to this crisis through, art, the written word, or action. The culminating event will occur on Saturday, November 11, 10 am in the Quiet Reading Room at Martin Library in York, where the teen participants are hosting the York Opioid Collaborative in a Town Hall style meeting. Also on view will be the Pillar of Remembrance, a column of memorials to loved ones lost to addiction. Community members are invited to post pictures or stories of friends and family members to create a visual showing the impact of the opioid epidemic on the York County community.

The opioid epidemic in York County is growing.  Now it’s time for teens to write their part of this story.
