Introductory Letterpress Workshop at Marketview Arts

Presented by Center for Community Engagement at York College of Pennsylvania at Marketview Arts

Do you love typography? Letters that are older than your grandparents? Do you love storytelling? Poetry? How about really cool machines? Machines with history? Do you like the smell of ink? What about printmaking? Are you interested in tactile making? Are you okay with getting your hands dirty?

Let’s combine all of these in a Letterpress workshop at Catch and Release Press.

No experience? No problem!

Our workshop series in letterpress is offered to anyone who wants to learn how to print. It is designed to be a place of physical making. You will be engaged in the traditional art of letterpress. You will discover what is old is new again.

This month’s workshop: Verse, into Art: Letterpress Poster

In this one-day letterpress workshop, attendees will combine meaningful texts and perhaps a bit of decoration. Watch the words take form and to bring new meaning. The hands-on workshop covers all the basics of letterpress printing. Attendees will learn first-hand how to set wood and metal type, and to learn how to print using our shop presses and how to work safely in the studio.

The workshop runs from 9 am until 4 pm. The day starts off with a tour of the Catch and Release Press shop and instruction. The majority of the workshop consists of sifting through C&RP’s vast collection of 100-year-old wood type, metal type and other letterpress things to create and print beautiful form. Clean-up begins at 3 pm and the day finishes up at 4 pm. Lunch is not provided, but there are many options nearby at Central Market.
