The 87th PA was organized in York, Pennsylvania and mustered in for a three-year enlistment in September 1861. The 87th PA boasted several notable York County residents. During the war, the regiment aided in guarding the Northern Central Railway, and took part in the battles of the 1864 Overland Campaign. In October 1864 their three-year enlistment expired. Those who had not re-enlisted returned to a grateful York to a celebratory feast given by the town at the Army Hospital at Penn Commons. The 200 remaining members of the regiment played an important role at the Battle of Cedar Creek. There, Corporal Daniel Reigle of Company F earned the regiment’s only Medal of Honor.
Today, the 87th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company C is a family oriented, non-profit Civil War reenacting and living history organization. It is dedicated to the better understanding and preservation of the history of the American Civil War. I have been a member of the regiment group for over five years. The 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company C, participates in major battle re-enactments and living history events, which are conducted for public education. The company also lends its support to the preservation of battlefields, monuments and historic sites of the Civil War.
