Apr 12 2024
Step Afrika!

The first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping returns to the Appell Center, blending percussive dance styles, traditional African dances, and contemporary dance and art forms into a powerful artistic experience. Much more than a dance show, Step Afrika also integrates songs, storytelling, humor, and audience participation.

BIO

Founded in 1994 as an exchange program with the Soweto Dance Theatre of Johannesburg, Step Afrika! is the first professional Dance Company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping.

Step Afrika! is in the top 5 African American dance companies in the US. It is the largest African American-led arts organization in Washington, DC. It is Washington, DC’s only cultural ambassador.

Many of the dancers attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and are members of Historically Black Greek Fraternities and Sororities.

The Company reaches tens of thousands each year through a 50-city tour of American colleges and theaters. They perform globally as an official U.S. Cultural Ambassador.
