Presented by York County History Center at York County Historical Society Museum, York PA

Jun 09 2018
America and World War I

John Maietta will highlight the United States’ involvement in World War I from the home front to the battlefield.

The History Center’s June Second Saturday program will mark the 100th anniversary of World War I highlighting the United States’ involvement in World War I from the home front to the battlefield.

York College of Pennsylvania history instructor John Maietta will explore the American experience during the Great War.  One hundred years ago the New World came to the rescue of the Old, as more than two million U.S. troops entered active combat in World War I. Maietta will discuss the  causes of the war, its course on the battlefields of Europe, and its impact on American society and culture. The program will include York County connections and examine the conflict’s troubled and controversial peace, but also its legacy for people at home, in memories of liberty bonds, victory gardens, and patriotic support for the local boys who joined the fight to “make the world safe for democracy.”
