Join us for the opening reception of Clay & Pigment by Andrew Smith at the Out Door Country Club on Friday, May 17 from 6-8pm!
Andrew Smith’s art interests have focused on two distinct mediums: photography and, later, the clay monoprint process. In the first, pigment inks (which have a long lifespan) were utilized for many photographs on display. The clay monoprint artist hand-mixes universal pigments with clay and water to create the slips they paint with.
While most visitors will be familiar with the basic production of photographs, they may be experiencing clay monoprints for the first time. The printer utilizes the colored clay slips noted above rather than ink or paint. The most intriguing aspect, however, is that remnants of each print stay behind on the clay slab upon which the artworks are designed. Rather than starting fresh, these echoes of previous prints appear randomly in future works. Each print influences the next.
The Out Door Country Club exhibit area is a perfect setting to explore the contrast between Andrew Smith’s two artistic worlds. Despite the stark differences in mediums and tools, do any similarities emerge?
